Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson was a First Lady of many “firsts”
She was the first First Lady to undertake a scheduled campaign tour independent of her husband. On a train called the “Lady Bird Special," she traveled through eight southern states for four days, delivering speeches from the caboose in support of her husband’s election.
Lady Bird was the first First Lady to hold the Bible for her husband at his swearing in ceremony during the 1965 inauguration; every First Lady since then has followed suit.
Mrs. Johnson was the first First Lady to have written speeches for her speaking engagements; her predecessors almost always did so without prepared text.
In 1967, Lady Bird Johnson became the first First Lady to visit Southeast Asia.
