“My heart found its home long ago in the beauty, mystery, order and disorder of the flowering earth.”    -Lady Bird Johnson

Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson was a First Lady of many “firsts”
  • She was the first First Lady to undertake a scheduled campaign tour independent of her husband. On a train called the “Lady Bird Special," she traveled through eight southern states for four days, delivering speeches from the caboose in support of her husband’s election.
  • Lady Bird was the first First Lady to hold the Bible for her husband at his swearing in ceremony during the 1965 inauguration; every First Lady since then has followed suit.
  • Mrs. Johnson was the first First Lady to have written speeches for her speaking engagements; her predecessors almost always did so without prepared text.
  • In 1967, Lady Bird Johnson became the first First Lady to visit Southeast Asia.
